Film: Just Carmen

Just Carmen (2022) is a short film that follows Carmen Cirnfus (she/they) as they reflect on their upbringing as an Afro-Austrian in the village of Alt-Nagelberg, Austria. The film explores the profound impact of being the only person of color in a small rural community, tracing how these experiences shaped Carmen’s childhood and adulthood. Interweaving personal narrative with broader social reflection, Just Carmen also considers the resonance and significance of the Black Lives Matter movement within the Austrian context.

Carmen’s story is one of many within the global Black diaspora, offering nuanced insights into the intersections of race, identity, and society.
