In Focus: Turning the Page. Representations of Blackness

In Focus: Turning the Page. Representations of Blackness is an ongoing artistic and research-based project I initiated in 2023 at the Belvedere Museum. Through this work, I examine the representation of Black people in European art history from the medieval period to the present, asking how visual culture has shaped ideas of race, power, and belonging over time.

My approach combines art historical research with artistic interpretation, treating the museum as both an archive and a living site of knowledge production. I am interested in how Black figures appear within European collections—often marginalized, stereotyped, or rendered invisible—and in how these representations reflect broader histories of colonialism and racialization. Rather than positioning Black presence as peripheral, the project insists on its centrality to European art history.

The project unfolds through a range of public-facing formats, including guided tours for university students, school-aged children, arts and cultural professionals, and the public. Alongside these tours, I have curated a diverse accompanying program that includes poetry-led tours, lectures, and community events, creating space for collective reflection and dialogue.

The tour was conceptualized by me and is conducted in collaboration with Paul Walther from the Belvedere’s Art Mediation Department. In addition to the live formats, the project also exists as an audio tour, which can be accessed both online and within the museum, extending the work beyond the physical space of the gallery.

Through Turning the Page, I aim to open critical conversations about museum collections, institutional responsibility, and the possibilities of more inclusive and decolonial approaches to art history, while inviting audiences to engage differently with familiar images and narratives.
